Among the named positions of the Kama Sutra, the Congress of the Cow (Sanskrit dhenuka) is one of the most recognisable. Its striking English name, a Victorian rendering that has stuck for well over a century, has given it a life of its own in modern popular culture. The name
The Sanskrit dhenuka means simply "of the cow." The imagery is drawn from the natural surroundings of the classical Indian countryside, where cattle were among the most familiar features of daily life. The name has nothing to do with any pejorative modern sense; in classical India, the cow was a positive image of gentleness, patience and shared life.
The physical arrangement
The Congress of the Cow is a rear-facing position, in which one partner leans forward and the other approaches from behind. Vatsyayana describes it briefly, in one paragraph, without elaboration. It is one arrangement among several, given no more emphasis than its neighbours in the text.
Its place in Book Two
The position is mentioned in Book Two, along with the other named arrangements. In the classical text it is not singled out as either advanced or unusual. Its modern prominence is largely a matter of its memorable English name.
The Victorian translation history
The English phrase "Congress of the Cow" comes from the Burton translation of 1883, in which Sir Richard Burton and his collaborators rendered the Sanskrit term into English with a certain Victorian floridity. Later translators have used more neutral wording — for example, "the manner of the cow" or "the bovine arrangement", but the Burton phrase has proved impossible to dislodge from popular usage.
Later tradition
The position appears again in the medieval erotic literature that grew out of the Kama Sutra tradition, and in the illustrated manuscript traditions of Rajput and Mughal painting. Its status in that later tradition is much the same as in the Kama Sutra itself: one arrangement among many, treated without particular emphasis.
How modern readers meet the position
Most modern readers meet the Congress of the Cow through popular articles and lists rather than through the classical text itself. Those popular treatments tend to exaggerate its exoticism. The classical text, read in a good modern translation, is much more restrained.
A note on tone
The Congress of the Cow, like the other positions of the Kama Sutra, is best understood as one item in a language of shared life. Its value in the classical text is not that it is unusual, but that it belongs to a vocabulary large enough to suit different moods, different phases of a relationship and different evenings. The number of arrangements a couple knows matters less than the ease with which they can move between them.
